is Kenny Johnson Weaving Swat?
Is Dominique Luca departing from S.W.A.T.? Indeed, he is. Kenny Johnson, a regular cast member since Season 1, will bid farewell earlier than the rest of the cast, transitioning to a recurring role in Season 7. Johnson portrays Dominique Luca, the third-in-command on Hondo’s team and the driver of the team’s armored vehicle, known as Black Betty. He comes from a lineage of SWAT members, with his grandfather serving on one of the LAPD’s inaugural SWAT teams in the 1970s. Luca has garnered a dedicated fan following, making the news of his brief appearance in the final season a surprise to many.
Showrunner Andrew Dettmann, in an interview with TVLine prior to Season 7's debut, clarified that this decision was made to ensure Luca receives a fitting conclusion. "Considering Season 7 as the final 13 episodes, we aimed to give each character their due farewell," he elaborated. "Thus, the episodes allotted for them are deeply focused on their individual journeys and character development."
Alongside Luca, original cast member Alex Russell, who portrays Jim Street, will also transition to recurring status and depart early in the season. Dettmann emphasized that the initial episodes will center on Street and Luca. "I'm particularly enthusiastic about the episodes dedicated to them," he shared. "Our aim for the final 13 was to ensure that no character felt neglected, with standout episodes dedicated to both Alex and Kenny, exploring the arcs of Street and Luca.

Why is Luca Leaving Swat?
In Johnson's goodbye episode, it became clear quite early that Luca survived the multiple gunshot wounds from the previous episode. However, after a time jump of several weeks, Luca received distressing news over the phone. A doctor informed him that an MRI revealed irreversible nerve damage caused by the bullet in his shoulder.
As a result, Luca is no longer able to serve on S.W.A.T. Instead of taking a desk job, he chose to retire. His retirement was marked by a formal ceremony attended by everyone outside of headquarters. TVLine interviewed Johnson about Luca's farewell and the feelings it stirred up for the actor.
