Baby Reindeer Ending Explained

Baby Reindeer ends with Donny's stalker, Martha, going to jail and Donny trying to move forward with his life. But it's not that simple. There's more to the story, including a scene where Donny makes a questionable choice. The show follows Donny Dunn, who wants to be a comedian, but a woman named Martha starts stalking him after she walks into the bar where he works. Dealing with her brings back memories of a terrible thing that happened to him years ago.

In the final episode, Donny becomes famous after a breakdown on stage. Martha stops stalking him for a bit but then starts again when she doesn't like how he talks about her. Donny tells the police and his parents everything. Martha gets arrested and goes to jail for nine months.

Even though Martha's gone, Donny gets obsessed with understanding her. His ex-girlfriend helps him get better and he moves in with her family. He doesn't go back to his old girlfriend, Teri, and comedy seems like it's over for him. But there's still another problem—Donny was raped by someone named Darrien. He visits Darrien but ends up talking to him like they're friends. Darrien offers him a job, which Donny accepts at first.

Outside, Donny starts to panic, realizing he made a mistake. He goes to a pub, and the bartender gives him a free drink, reminding him of Martha. In the end, Martha's in jail, and we find out 'baby reindeer' was a toy she had. Donny is free from Martha, but he's still dealing with his past traumas.

Is Baby Reindeer Real Story?

Baby Reindeer is a true story. Richard Gadd, who created the show, was stalked by a woman, just like the main character, Donny Dunn. Netflix asked him to turn his story into a series after he made a one-man show about it. Gadd also acts in the series as Donny, which must be tough because he's reliving his own experiences. In the show, he played all the characters, but here, Jessica Gunning plays his stalker.

The series is a bit different from real life, though. In the show, Martha, Donny's stalker, gets arrested, but Gadd hasn't said what happened to his real stalker. Gadd wrote another show about his sexual assault, but there's no video of him breaking down like Donny does in Baby Reindeer.

Sometimes, shows say they're based on true stories when they're not very true. But Baby Reindeer is mostly based on Gadd's real life.

Baby Reindeer Review

They say that comedy often comes from tough times, and Richard Gadd's show, Baby Reindeer, surely proves that. Richard, a British actor and writer, first shared his scary experience with a stalker at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2019 through a play. Later, Netflix turned his story into a TV series.

If you look online, you'll see that Gadd keeps the TV version true to his original story. It's raw and real. For example, when it comes to the scary world of stalking, Baby Reindeer doesn't play it safe. It's a deep look at how mental health and being groomed by an abuser can mess with a person's mind.

Richard Gadd bravely shows his own struggles with a stalker in the series. Only someone who has faced something similar could bring such honesty to the screen. Gadd deserves praise for sharing his story and starting conversations about mental health.

Jessica Gunning, playing the disturbed stalker, is amazing to watch. Her character's twisted thoughts are unsettling, but you might find yourself feeling sorry for her, even though she's a criminal. Gunning's acting is so good, she can switch from being smart to being scary in an instant.

Nava Mau, as Donny's girlfriend Teri, brings balance to the intense drama. Her confidence contrasts with Donny's struggles, showing moments of normal love. The series talks about 'Stockholm Syndrome', where victims start to care for their abusers. Baby Reindeer helps us understand why this happens. The show goes deeper than typical thrillers, especially when dealing with stalking and mental health. But if these topics are hard for you, be careful when watching.
